Myquestion is: Is every bit of matter in the universe affected by all of the matter? Is every galaxy, no matter how far away affected by all of the other galaxies?
All matter in the universe is affected by all matter in the universe regardless of distance. Have a read of http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gravity
Can a star exist in the universe without being part of a galaxy?
Yes, it's possible. Recently astronomers detected a star being shot out of our own galaxy. The article: http://www.universetoday.com/am/publish ... tml?822005

It was mentioned in a posting that a group of galaxies were being influenced by the galaxies nearest to them.
