Imagine what humans thought viewing auroras in the past.. 500 years ago. 10000 etc..

Must have been rather frightening for them. They (auroras) probably could have spawned some of the ‘higher being’ beliefs..

There are a lot of wonders in the universe. Thanks to APOD, Hubble, astronomy, and the Internet, they can be shared with so many. :D

Thanks for the link - it brings back memories!
Imagine positioning yourself 1,000 km closer to those shimmering green and red curtains where it is bright enough to read by ... but you can't ... it's too mesmerizing. It is almost like non-stop fireworks, always moving gaining no ground then a startling burst of crimson red engulfs everything in view but the crescent Moon …(sigh) ... Thanks.

I have witnessed the Aurora from northern Saskatewan (close to magnetic north). You have to see it - it cannot be described.

I'd love to take an Alaskan cruise in late June some day. They say the views are just utterly beautiful.

Yeah that is a gorgeous photo. It's a goal of mine to see the auroras someday. I was in Alaska once...but it was in July, so the sky never even got dark. :?

One can but look with awe at the beauty of nature with scenes like these. I like the way the aurora is nestled below the stars in this picture.
