The Cosmic Reef in SHO

NGC 2020 and NGC 2014 are located in Dorado, the Large Magellanic Cloud. Both nebulae are shaped by powerful stellar winds. NGC 2020 is the blue circular nebula and the neighbour, displaying warm colors is NGC 2014 in the upper left part of the picture. They are of course only visible from the Southern Hemisphere. Together they are named the "Cosmic Reef".

HD 269748 is a Wolf-Rayet star (Brey )48, located in the center of the NGC 2020 nebula, explaining the the shape of the nebula and the ionized Oxygen that gives its color.

The acquistions were made at Chilescope and the composition is in the Hubble palette.

Dates: October 2, 5, 6 2021
Exposure: 8h 20'

LDN899 Dark Nebula
This is a 6 panel mosaic captured using a 5nm Ha filter on an SBIG ST10XME and TMB130 OTA.
The stars were removed to highlight the Ha and better display what looks like a dusty ghost emerging from the structure.
Frame calibration and mosaic assembly in Astro Pixel Processor and image processing in Photoshop.
Exposure times: Ha-3 hours per panel, RGB- 30 minutes per panel

In the theme of Halloween, I decided to shoot the "Ghost" of Cassiopeia (IC 63) & nearby IC 59.

The bright blue star is Gamma Cassiopeia (Navi) and is the central star in the W-shaped asterism of Cassiopeia.

This image has 30 minutes each of RGB for color (in the nebula and stars) and 8 hours of Hydrogen Alpha to bring out the nebulosity, of which there is quite a bit lingering around this area.

The Rosette Nebula (Caldwell 49) - Oriented in the 'Skull' position the beautiful rose turns into a spooky space skull. This image was combined with the HOSS color palette and then tweaked to ghastly Halloween color scheme.

Image data collected in Michigan in Febuary, and reprocessed for a Halloween rendition. This image represents ~7 hours of integration time.

This image was captured through 3nm ultra-narrowband filters and is a composite of ionized Sulphur, Hydrogen, and Oxygen atoms and displayed with a modified SHO "Hubble" Palette. Data was collected over 2 nights from the 11th to 12th of October 2021 from the outskirts of Vancouver, Canada.

Full Moon Rise at Abbey of Pannonhalma

Last Wednesday I travelled to Western Hungary in order to observe and capture the rising 99.9% Full Moon. Near Écs village, the Moon could be seen rising next and above the Abbey of Pannonhalma. This Abbey was founded in 996 and has been continuously functioning since then -- it's one of the earliest/oldest historical monument of Hungary. The gothic basilica was built in the 12th century. Today it's an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
I hate making HDR compositions, this is the post-processed result of one single shot.

The Tarantula Nebula (30 Doradus)

The Tarantula nebula is located in the large Magellanic Cloud,
a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way.
This is a somewhat unique target in that we are able to image
a nebula, in some detail, situated in another galaxy.
It is said that if the Tarantula nebula wasas close to earht
as the Orion nebula, it would be visible during the day and
take up a quater of the sky.

Perhaps the most famous star cluster on the sky, the bright stars of the Pleiades can be seen without binoculars from even the depths of a light-polluted city. With a long exposure from a dark location, though, the dust cloud surrounding the Pleiades star cluster becomes very evident.

Two techniques were used to get this image: framing selection and downsampling. I chose only about 65% of the frames that I actually shot, removing bad signal from out of focus, cloudy, or polluted frames. I also downsampled the image by 50% increasing snr and the amount of dust I imaged.

Supernova Remnant: The Veil Nebula

This is a 4-panel mosaic totaling 80 hours of exposure time captured in Ha and OIII. Each panel is 40 x 15 minute subs in Ha and OIII shot at 0.88"/pixel resolution.

The Veil has always been one of my favorite objects in the sky and I've always wanted to shoot a high-resolution image of the entire target. I finally completed that this summer and this is the resulting image.
