The Cell: An Image Library had a link to this thread on its home page; it now has a link to the Quiz: Cellular or Celestial? Redux thread. Indeed, the quiz idea came from David Orloff, the manager of the Image Library. I hope those who came to the quiz from that site post about their experience taking this quiz, whether they enjoyed it, how they did, and whether they'd like to see additional similar quizzes.

I guess most of the audience of the beautiful "quiz" is more or less "celestial-orientated"
wouldnt it be very interesting to do this quiz with the "cellular-people"?
and note the differences in the response....? if their are any?

Thanks for the info, sam and neptunium; much appreciated! I would not have fared so well, I'm sure, though I've been looking at APODs for a good long time now AND have some experience -- way back there somewhere in my past -- looking at cells, too. (This was a fun quiz for me to work on, as it combines two of my interests very nicely.)

I got Monday's image 1 and Thursday's image 2 wrong. The first one looked like the surface of a star, and the second one looked like a cell. However, Tuesday's image 2 was a lucky guess.

Monday's picture 1 tripped me up-- I thought the cellular photo was too much like other sun pictures (perhaps at a different wavelength) to not be celestial. Basically, two years of reading APOD and Asterisk* daily taught me to recognize celestial; if I didn't recognize it, it must be cellular. Tuesday and Wednesday illustrate this point best.

neptunium, that's a great idea and maybe I'll do that for the next quiz. Thanks!!

I was thinking that the images could be randomized and numbered, and the options for the poll would say

• Image 1 is cellular
• Image 1 is celestial
• Image 2 is cellular
• Image 2 is celestial
  
  ...
• Image 10 is cellular
• Image 10 is celestial

Just a suggestion. Food for thought.

Quiz redux

What would be a nice feature, I think--regardless of whether or not the quiz is resurrected as a daily with more questions--would be to set up a new page that is a quiz just with these five questions (and the answers on a different page!) so that new-comers can continue to stumble across and enjoy it. Shouldn't be too much trouble to set up, I would think.

Boy, TNT, you're some taskmaster!! I posted the answers at 12:04 AM. Good thing I'd set an alarm for 11:30 PM each night this week, because I'd dozed off and the answers would have been a LOT later without it!

Seems two sets of images might have been too easy, and Tuesday's maybe a little harder than it should have been, hmm? I wonder what those coming from the cell library link thought about this quiz, and hope some of them will weigh in on it.

I moved the Friday quiz into production at 11:44 PM EST; means you had perhaps an extra 16 minutes to figure out the images. I hope you used that time wisely!

Friday's quiz is so hard! The first picture looks like nothing to me.

Thursday's, actually. I thought that was the hardest quiz. Image 1 looked a lot like a nebula with hydrogen gas and dust, but it looked an awful lot like a cell, too. And image 2 was either another nebula or an underwater microscopic organism. But honestly, I didn't know if those were even the right objects.

For which day's quiz, TNT? Friday's?

I had no idea at all. I chose option 5, though, for the fun of it.

I think this quiz is fun. What makes it so difficult to me is that the colors are wrong (mostly... I think at least one of Thursday's entire may have been moderately "true"...).

Personally I use colors to understand celestial objects, and I usually ascribe a color to them right when I here them mentioned. Sirius? Sparklingly white and many-colored, but bluish all the same. Jupiter? Striped white and orange-brown. The Andromeda galaxy? Pale yellowish. The North America nebula? Pink. Venus? White. The Moon? Gray. Asteroids? Gray... (and here is where I'm losing interest).

In this quiz the celestial objects are the "wrong color", which makes it hard for me. But of course, if a quiz wasn't hard, it wouldn't be worth doing, would it?

It is interestint how things in nature are vastly similar appearing whether in Micro-scale or Macro-scale

I really like this quiz. It shows us many different objects that many of us may never have seen or heard of, and makes me wonder if it is one or the other. I haven't seen many (or any) of these cellular objects, which makes the quiz fun for me. Each time I see the answer, I learn something new. I would like to see this quiz go on for a while, if not longer. Thank you for taking the time to post new images each day.

Guest, the poll ends each night at around midnight EST, so a new one can take its place. The answers are posted at that time. Just take today's quiz. Tomorrow, there will be a new one with different images.

This is really annoying. I just found this quiz today, and apparently there's no way to go back (or at least no way I've been able to find) to the previous days' quizzes without seeing the answers first. Completely spoils the fun. Really dumb.
