I have tried http://www.google.com/ as you suggested, but all it shows me is some colored letters, buttons and text. Just like it did yesterday, when I came there for another reason. Are you sure tornado pictures actually were there?

This image is fantastic. There is a link that shows alot of these images, but I cannot remember where I put it. Try google.

I have my doubts that the image is doctored, personally. The Sun angle is pretty low in this image, lower than the shadows cast by objects on the ground seem to indicate.

The Sun is behind the photographer on their left side, so most of the shadows will be pointing away from their position, making them appear much shorter in length than they actually are (which creates the appearance of a higher Sun).

Also, consider how much of the tornado is illuminated by the Sun; the Sun needs to be low enough to light almost the entire height of the tornado, despite the presense of the wall cloud and mesocyclone which would shade it from any high-angle sunlight.

APoD seems a fairly credible bunch, also. Not that something couldn't slip through, I daresay. :) But I think this picture is probably legit.

Exactly, those are both excellant ideas :o)

Good Idea BMAONE23! They could also note when it was last shown.

Perhaps they should start out the captions on all repeat images

"In this archive image"

To indicate that it has been aired before.

I dont care that it was posted again, i was simple saying they should have offered a reason to their long time viewers as to why it was up again.

Rainbow/Tornado picture doctored? (APOD 2 Jul 2006)

by drjjdonovan » Mon Jul 03, 2006 3:35 am

Today's dramatic APOD picture purports to show a funnel cloud and a rainbow. I suspect the picture is doctored.

As the text points out, the sun is shining through an opening in the clouds on the left. The shadows in the picture confirm this. However, the sun must be behind the viewer in order to observe a rainbow. Further, the angle of the sun above the horizon--as shown by the shadows--is too large to form the rainbow shown, which indicates a much lower solar angle.

I regret reporting this. I love the picture so much I hate to dispute it, but a SNAFU happened somewhere.

What does it matter this photo has been shown before? Many new folks will view it for the first time. Sorry we have to play catch up and bore you.

REPEAT PICTURE OF THE DAY

by beautiful_disaster_23 » Sun Jul 02, 2006 5:02 pm

Todays photo is totally a repeat ! It was featured on June 13 2005 and today July 2 2006 !!! How can such highly respected people, make such a foolish mistake ....at least if you are going to repeat a photo, make a note of it saying so, and why you did.

I saw the photo before but not sure where. The buildings put into perspective how large that tornado is!

Sorry don't know if it is but doesn't remind me of anything I've seen before. 10/10 for the photographer tho.

Is it an urban myth but I was told that per sq mile the UK has more tornadoes than anywhere else?

I think that today's APOD is a duplicate from a few months ago.
