I needed to add how much I admire Alan Friedman's picture of the sun....I could ponder it for hours. Thank You very much Alan!

Moon and Jupiter conjunction
http://ofpink.wordpress.com/
Copyright: Stefano De Rosa The evening of March 6, 2011, I moved to a selected location with a nice view of the Alps and Turin (Italy) in order to capture the beautiful conjunction between a young Moon (less than two days old) and Jupiter. The celestial pair was shining above the twilight colors of the western horizon.

ISS/Discovery Transit of the Sun (March 1)

So I drove 1800 miles to see an event lasting 1/5 of a second... not really of course. I drove to the Winter Star Party for the steady skies, warm temperatures and the company of good astronomy friends. But when I heard that the ISS would transit the sun nearby, I had to give it a try. I was scheduled to give my talk 12:30-1:30 - the transit centerline was 69 minutes later, 20 miles to the north on Marathon. So with the help of friends Brian Shelton and Mark Beale, I finished my talk, jumped into the car with solar imaging gear and we got set up just in time to catch it. I underestimated the narrowness of this event. We were about 5000 feet south of the centerline in a good location... another 500 feet and we would have missed it entirely. Lucky day! The space shuttle is docked to the ISS - so happy to record this farewell to Discovery.
