Yes, all images are breathtaking! If I had to pick just one, I too would go for the image with the northern lights, then the moonrise and then the Milky Way.

Thank you for voting; the poll for this thread is now closed. There is nothing stopping anyone from saying which image(s) he/she prefers, however! I'm always interested to read why people select one image over another; if you'd like to share, please do!

While all the photos are good, for me they all fall into the category of "now let's take a break from pictures of the horsehead nebula."

Call me a stick-in-the-mud, but I feel astronomy photos should emphasize stars, so I voted for ESO VLT (UT4) Telescope Finding the Galactic Center with its Laser Guide Star (LGS), Chile.

I especially like the theme of this photo -- of connecting the Earth to the stars.

The dramatic impact of the Temple of Poseidon Moonrise was hard to resist and the fascination of the southern aurora and the serenity of the Turkish landscape are all wonderful pictures and I so wish that I could travel to these places to see them for myself. But the science and technology behind ESO's VLT and the Laser Guide just couldn't be bypassed as the most significant advancement in our search to find out what's out there from this group - I could only choose the ESO VLT Laser Guide photo for my vote.

I voted for the temple and moon. It seems fitting, as a troubled optimist considering how things are going for us earthlings, to contemplate ancient ruins and a desolate planetary object.

All the photos are great, but I have never seen a photo of an Aurora that had all those colors. I would be very interested in the explanation for those colors. I can see why the photo of the Moon over a Greek tempel is so popular, It is an excellent photo visually.

Canopia, yeah, if there's a aurora pic in a poll, the chances are really good that I will vote for it, no matter how fabulous the other images are! Obviously, I think all of these are good -- they wouldn't be in the poll if they weren't. I like the geographic and subject diversity in this set of images a lot; of course, I like the beauty and coolness of all the images, too.

But auroras, and yes, especially australis, are a big big draw for me. I'm simply not going to see one where I am. (I soooo need to go elsewhere!)

Owlice, I understand completely. And this is an Aurora "Australis", I cannot recognise the stars beyond the aurora easily. End of the world feeling comes to the mind.

Thanks for the comments so far; they are very interesting. I hope that others who vote will share why they selected a particular image over the others.

I find something in each of these images (as always!), but I have seen the moon rise, Jupiter in the sky, and stars (though not a laser pointing to the galactic center, which is very cool). I have never seen an aurora and admittedly have a "thing" about them; I've wanted to see one since I first learned about them in 4th grade. So I selected the aurora picture; it looks like a particularly strong aurora, and makes me wish very very much I had seen it myself!

That said, I certainly wouldn't mind seeing the moon rise while in Greece, the stars overhead while in Chile, or the moon and Jupiter over a lake in Turkey.

I need to get out more...

Interesting that picture #1 is today's (May 14 '10) EPOD < http://epod.usra.edu/ >

To my mind, this is where photos like this, and the last one in this set, belong. All of these are good photos (natch), however my idea of astronomy photos is more about us earthlings exploring and finding out about what's 'out there' and less about looking at what's here. Thus I voted for the photo of the laser pointing to the centre of our galaxy.

Thanks for the great site!

I like the laser, but it seems to be sucking in the polls.

I would say either the laser pointing at the Galactic Center, or the Moonrise over Greece.
