Not confused...just using different criteria than you use. I like great pictures that show great physics. Between the lightning, turbulence, and glowing lava, the eruption wins hands down. Besides, when was the last time APOD had a picture that so beautifully captures a story that dominated the news for a week.

Not that I decide these things, but since pictures of volcanoes on other planets are fair game, seems sporting enough to me to make volcanoes here eligible for inclusion, too.

This discussion, and these objections, have been gone through before here. The Earth is an astronomical body, and happenings on it are considered to be worthy, occasionally, of being shown in an APOD. And any APOD is a candidate for APOM. Sure it's a stretch, but it's a stretch with a pedigree. ;-)

The icelandic volcano is NOT an astronomy picture. It's a very nice picture and very pleasing to my eye (I am a geologist) but shouldn't be APOM. Sorry, geologists can be picky too
