I don't think the comparison is a very good one. Nor is the name odd- it describes very well the process, which is to digitally project an image map onto a 3D model. That's nothing like the map you reference. The closest non-digital analog is the production of a globe, where individual flat map segments are attached to the surface of a physical 3D model.

I see. I've never heard of "digital projection" before but figured that's what it was just from looking at it. It seems like an odd name to me.

I think we can rule out projection in the sense of slide projectors. I think what we are talking about here is like the digital creation of a view not captured directly, but projected from other scenes.

It means that a digital image of the entire surface of the object was constructed from individual images (such as from Cassini), and then a 3D model was rendered by mapping the surface image onto a sphere, ring, etc.

It's a little unclear why this topic is titled "Gasparri", or gives Daniele Gasparri as the copyright holder.
