See Robert Gendler's labeled negative, rotated 180 from his picture.

DavidLeodis wrote:I am having trouble identifying which is NGC 2170 in this APOD. I thought it might be the large reddish area below and left of the small red area near the centre but the results of Internet searches have made me more confused. For example the APOD of March 3 2005 seems to indicate that it is the small blue area immediately right of that small central red area. This is (to me) a good example of where a labelled version would have been a great help. I would be grateful if anyone could clarify for me which is NGC 2170 in the APOD of January 14 2009. Thanks. :)
In APOD: 2007 February 28 - Stars, Dust and Nebula in NGC 2170, I think NGC 2170 is the blue reflection nebula in the upper left, NGC 2182 is in the bottom right. See APOD: 2006 August 5 - Still Life with NGC 2170. Ironically, the heart of the Mon R2 association is in the emmision nebula below and right of NGC 2170. In APOD: 2009 January 14 - NGC 2170: Celestial Still Life that would place NGC 2170 at the center (bright blue nebula) and NGC 2182 at 9 o'clock half way to the left edge.

Elizabeth Driscoll: I have seen these flowers all over.
They are growing like parasites on other plants.
All of a sudden. Where are they coming from?
.
Nancy Bellicec: Outer space?
.
Jack Bellicec: What are you talking about? A space flower?
.
Nancy Bellicec: Well why not a space flower?
. Why do we always expect metal ships?
.
Jack Bellicec: I've NEVER expected metal ships.

Dr. David Kibner: We came here from a dying world. We drift through the universe,
from planet to planet, pushed on by the solar winds. We adapt and we survive.
The function of life is survival.
